Debunking The Hollywood Lymph Fad
Find yourself scrolling through google only to find a "general" definition of what the lymphatic system does? Confused as to whether "heavy metal toxins" are being flushed through your lymphatic system? Let break down the science and take a closer look at your body's natural "Brita" system.
The lymphatic system is actually apart of the circulatory system! Technically speaking, the lymphatic system is an independent system; however it is structurally close to veins. Interestingly, the lymphatic and venous system work in unison to move lymph. One cannot work without the other.
Lymph fluid contains
White blood cells (lymphocytes) - your body's natural warriors against infection/disease
Chyle (fat + protein) from the intestines
3 main functions
Transport/collect fluid flowing between your tissues. This fluid is later returned back into the venous system.
Boosts the body's immune system by absorbing/transporting essential fatty acids.
Lymph organs + nodes are the body's "filter" to assist in removing microorganisms and foreign particles that often enter the body.
How is this relevant to my health?
Excess water and proteins are always leaking from surrounding blood capillaries causing fluid to accumulate between tissue spaces. The lymphatic system prevents a "build up" from occurring. Consequently, a disruption in the lymphatic system can often cause swelling and/or decrease immune function.
What exactly is "lymph"? Does it contain "toxins"?
The lymphatic system carries clear fluid called "LYMPH". The word “Lymph” is derived from the Latin word Lympha: water. In contrary to popular belief, the lymphatic system does not always contain heavy "toxins" (don't believe the tabloids). If exposed, a healthy lymph system will typically recognize and assists in detox process moving toxins through the lymph nodes to be filtered. However if there is repeated daily exposure, a build up within the lymph system has potential to trigger an overwhelmed system. An overwhelmed system can lead to mechanical issues within the system causing complications. One way to help reduce your risk of overloading your lymphatic system - limit exposure to environmental toxins such as chemical beauty products, cleaners and pesticides. A recent study suggested tattoo ink has potential to migrate and settle into lymph nodes permanently. Always research the ingredients in your tattoo ink! Avoid any inks containing metals such as titanium dioxide as it is a common inflammatory trigger.
The lymphatic system allows our bodies to regulate fluid and assist in immune response. It is vital for us to nurture our lymphatic system as a disruption would leave us prone to an unregulated immune system and undue side effects. Some side effects of inflammation may include - fatigue, poor immune health (frequent illness), mood fluctuations, weight gain, digestive issues.
For some, minor disruptions can be managed through various self care techniques such as healthy sleep hygiene, daily self manual lymph drainage, exercises and deep breathing techniques. Look for natural products reducing exposure to toxic chemicals. Eat a balanced diet and pick whole foods with minimal pesticide exposure. As always, it is best to consult with your doctor and CLT (Certified Lymphedema Therapist) - find one here.
